Out With the Old, In With the New
Have you ever had a hard time parting with something old that you knew you must get rid of? Maybe it was an old pair of shoes or an article of clothing that was tattered and torn, but oh, so comfortable. Perhaps, it was an old toy, in great condition that you loved so much as child, but it no longer was any use to you, in this season of life, and it was taking up space that needed to be utilized. We certainly are creatures of habit and we certainly do get attached to things, even things we should throw away, don’t we?
There are also old behaviors and behavioral patterns and old ways of thinking that we need to get rid of, as well. The Bible says in Romans 6:6 KJV, “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that we should not serve sin.” Romans 6:11 KJV, “Likewise, reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby.” 1 Peter 2:2 KJV As Christians, we are to throw away, get rid of, and destroy sin in our lives.
Is there some sin in your life that you’re holding on to that you know you should throw away? Is there some “stinking thinking” that you know you need to put away from you?
It is so important to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ on a moment-by-moment basis because what you and I think about is so important .Here’s why: all sin begins with a thought. That’s right. Before you or I sin, we have had a thought about it. We, Christians, are in a spiritual battle with a real enemy-the devil-who wants to destroy us. This battle takes place in our minds. God has given us spiritual armour to protect ourselves. One part of this spiritual armour that we are told to put on is truth. “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth.” Ephesians 6:14 KJV.
Our thoughts come from our hearts and the Bible says our hearts, deceive us and are wicked in Jeremiah 17:9 KJV. Do you believe that your own heart can deceive you and is wicked? “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiriturally discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV. Yes, my friends, even as being born-again children of God, if we do not question our thoughts and bring them into captivity to the obedience of Christ, we can believe wicked thoughts, deceive ourselves, and fall into the snare of the devil and every sin imaginable. That’s the bad news.
Here’s the good news: God has given us all we need. Look at 2 Peter 1:3 KJV, “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” We have power to renew our minds, through Christ, by following the instructions given us in Ephesians 4:24-25 KJV and Colossians 3:4-10 KJV and live in victory! However, we must be willing to do what God tells us to do. He is not going to force us to obey him, so we must choose.
