Hindrances to Kindness Part 1

A lady asked me in our coaching session this week, “Is it just me, or do people seem to be getting more and more unkind?” My reply to her was that it does seem that kindness is becoming rarer and rarer and that the way life is in our world today has taken us to a place, where, as a society, we no longer value kindness as a character trait that must be taught. There are several reasons for this and I will cover four today.
1. Kindness is a biblical command and people have left off reading and believing the Bible. “And be ye kind one to another….” Ephesians 4:32a KJV. Did you know that we are commanded to be kind?
2. Self-centeredness has taken the place of kindness. People, without the love of God, will naturally seek their own before the things of others. The Bible says, “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” Philippians 2:4 KJV
3. We believe kindness makes us weak. However, in complete contrast, the Bible tells us, “….for when I am weak, then am I strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10b KJV
4. We are always in a hurry. Life has become so fast-paced and jam-packed with activities and places to go that we no longer take the time to listen to someone or lend an ear to someone hurting. Yet, the Bible tells us, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear,…” James 1:19 KJV
We all value kindness in others and want and even expect them to be kind to us, but we seldom think of others, unless we are walking with God. The truth is, we must walk after the Holy Spirit in order to be truly kind. How are you doing with that?
