FOCUS ON THE LOVELY

There is much to focus on that is not lovely, especially during this time of year. Goblins, witches, vampires, and skeletons are featured in stores and neighborhood yards all around us. October 31 is a day in which death is glorified by many. Does this mean we should be focusing on these things? No, not if we want to follow Jesus more perfectly.
The Bible says we should focus our attention upon eight specific things. Do you know what those eight things are? They are found in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, my brethren, whatsoever thing are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
May I encourage you to commit Philippians 4:8 to memory and meditation, if you have not done so already? “Why?, you ask. Because it is vitally important for your mental health and well being to focus on these things, and even more importantly, it is obedience to Christ.
Hmm. What are you focusing on? Are you focusing on whatsoever is lovely? Lovely is defined as, “Amiable; that may excite love; possessing qualities which may invite affection.”- Webster’s 1828 Dictionary.
Jesus Christ is altogether lovely. Can you think of anything or any one more deserving of our focus? Will you choose to focus on the Lovely today?
